Held in high regard since ancient times -- first by the ancient Greeks then the Egyptians 3,500 years ago -- antioxidant-rich juniper berries were consumed as beverages for stamina and applied to the skin to reverse the effects of sunburn and aging. Egyptologists have discovered juniper berry evidence as part of royal burial artifacts.
Juniper berries have antiseptic properties, a perfect ingredient for soap to wash away germs. Also, it has anti-inflammatory properties (swelling = pain; reduction helps to alleviate these symptoms).
First recorded by Roman naturalist-naval commander Pliny in the first century AD, spearmint -- a sweet mint variety that has a softer scent as compared with peppermint -- has helped with insect bites (including bee stings), served as a refreshing as an ingredient for toothpaste, and blended with medicine to swallow easier. Both juniper berry and spearmint are safe and reliable and beneficial botanicals.
